Dr Jamie Wearn is a Registered Specialist in Equine Medicine and a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Large Animal Internal Medicine). He brings extensive clinical experience across primary care practice, racetrack medicine, and specialist referral caseload experience to the clinical service of the University of Melbourne Equine Centre.

Jamie is currently a Senior Lecturer in Equine Medicine at the University of Melbourne. His role encompasses teaching pre-clinical veterinary students across all aspects of equine medicine, supervising clinical students, delivering clinical services through the Equine Centre and contributing to the research endeavours. He is currently completing a PhD program in the field of equine clinical pharmacology.

He graduated from the University of Sydney in 2003 and completed an internship in equine medicine and surgery also at the University of Melbourne. Thereafter, he spent time in private practice in Sydney, North Yorkshire in the UK, and the Hunter Valley.  His path to specialisation began with a fellowship in equine medicine at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute in Kentucky, USA, in 2007, followed by a Large Animal Internal Medicine residency at Virginia Tech, graduating in 2010. In the same year, he achieved Diplomate status with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.

Following his residency, Jamie returned to private equine practice on the Gold Coast before being appointed to a faculty position at James Cook University in 2014. This is where his passion for veterinary education was realised, and the possibility of contributing to the horse population by mentoring veterinary students.

Jamie has also served as a Regulatory Veterinarian with Racing Victoria, where he was closely involved in injury prevention initiatives and contributed to the organisation’s safety strategy. During this time, he developed a strong interest in advanced diagnostic imaging and wearable biosensor technologies aimed at enhancing the health, welfare, and performance of the Thoroughbred racehorse.

Outside of work, Jamie enjoys spending time with his two children, travelling to the United States to visit family, and relaxing at the beach, where he has recently taken up surfing.
